Reading Katz’s Delicatessen Menu by Section

Illustrative MenuLedger editorial graphic

The 42-item in-store snapshot becomes more useful when sandwich, breakfast, grill, side and drink prices are compared within their own formats.

Katz’s Delicatessen has the largest item count in the current MenuLedger starter collection: 42 captured entries across six sections, all with recorded numeric prices. That completeness makes comparison possible, but only when the menu format stays visible. A $2.95 coffee, a $10.95 soup and a $32.95 meat combination answer different ordering questions. Treating $2.95–$32.95 as a single dining-price range would hide more than it explains.

The sandwich menu has two price bands

Hot Sandwiches contains seven entries from $27.95 to $32.95. The captured list includes pastrami, corned beef, brisket, knoblewurst, turkey, a Reuben and meat combinations. Cold Sandwiches also contains seven entries, but its range begins at $13.95 for a cheese sandwich and reaches $30.95 for tongue. The original-recipe salami entry stores the soft-salami price and carries the hard-salami amount in its note.

Breakfast is not just a lower-priced sandwich list

The all-day breakfast section separates bagel-and-lox formats from omelets. A bagel with cream cheese is recorded at $7.45; adding lox changes both the dish and the price, with the bagel, lox and cream cheese entry at $20.95 and the platter at $22.95. The omelets occupy a similar upper band, from $21.95 to $23.95. These are named menu formats, not inferred upgrades, so the distinction belongs in the comparison.

Sides and traditional dishes widen the menu

The eight-entry sides section includes salads, steak fries, a square potato knish, vegetarian baked beans, latkes and blintzes. It is the largest section by count, even though the better-known hot sandwiches carry higher prices. Soups & Grill then joins three $10.95 soups with grilled sandwiches and burgers. This is why section labels provide information beyond the item list: they show where the restaurant groups a dish and what nearby alternatives share its context.

Reading the numbers responsibly

All 42 entries had prices in the checked source, but that does not make an average automatically meaningful. The menu mixes drinks, sides, individual sandwiches, platters and breakfast dishes. MenuLedger therefore preserves exact item prices and section endpoints rather than presenting one “typical” spend. The verification block records when the official in-store menu was checked; later prices and availability should be confirmed with the restaurant.
